Out and about Gettysburg, PA

We toured the outskirts of Gettysburg, went on a hike and also to some farms. Such pretty countryside, it's so peaceful here. Saw a round barn, there's not too many left in the U.S., most of which are in Wisconsin.

Pretty flowers we saw on our hike

small lake we saw at Strawberry Hill where we started our hike

This is a Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog, so different looking, her name is Bailey

At the round barn we stopped at, they're so cute!!!

We should bring one home, this one especially

Eisenhower farm in Gettysburg, PA

Still in Gettysburg, PA, toured Ike and Mamie Eisenhower's farmhouse. It's located right next to the battlefield. This is the only home he ever owned, though they moved 40 times in the course of their marriage. The home has all been kept original, it looks as if they just walked out and would be back shortly, even clothes in the closet and the cars in the garage. It's a very modest home, simply furnished. President Eisenhower loved to paint, play cards, loved watching I Love Lucy. He ran a successful cattle business, Angus Cattle. He also loved to play golf and the PGA installed a putting green for him. There was also a skeet range. When people would come stay at the ranch, he would proudly show his Angus, going into the stalls and poking the cattle until they got up, making the secret service very nervous. Same thing when Winston Churchill visited, he would slap them on the rear!

This barn was next to the house and they kept it for horses and ponies for the children and grandchildren to ride.

The farm equipment still in the barn

Price on this gas tank was .24 9/10 cents a gallon

This is still a working ranch, and they have 12 baby cattle right now

This was the herdsmen house, built in 1797

This used to be a pond that his grandson David liked to fish in, it dried up in 1964

Gettysburg, PA

We're in Gettysburg, PA for the week. Thought we better find a place to stay over Memorial Day, it was hard finding a place because of the holiday. But, we're in a great place with lots to do!! We took an auto tour of the Gettysburg Battlefield, it was over 24 miles, hard to believe it was that spread out. Beautiful countryside, so peaceful, doesn't seem like it could be such a
tragic place then.

2nd day in Washington DC

Our second day in DC brought as much enjoyment as the first. So many things to learn and see.
Among other things, we went to the World War II Memorial for our dads, that really meant a lot to us.

We met these new friends in Williamsburg, VA and then saw them again when we were visiting Washington DC!! Carole, Bill and Bill and their two "girls", they're from Texas

Inside the Washington Monument

Looking out at the White House from the Washington Monument, it's 555 feet tall, you take a 70 second elevator ride to the top. You have to get tickets at 8 in the morning, it's free, but they only give out a certain amount per day. We didn't have tickets, but someone there gave us one and then the guard said, we could both go up, he laughed and said," It's a two for one day", we were so excited, didn't think we were going to be able to, nice surprise.

Still up high, looking at the Capital BuildingJust about to go up the elevator in the Washington Monument
